  • Camden Haven stages annual Regional Search and Reascue Exercise
  • May 14, 2016

Up to 40 Marine Rescue NSW members from eight Mid North Coast units have given their weekends to take part in the annual Regional Search and Rescue Exercise (SAREX), this year being staged at Camden Haven.

Our members have been joined by 10 Surf Life Saving members and officers from the Coffs Harbour Police Marine Area Command.

The participants are spending today at the North Haven Bowling Club, starting with overviews from both MRNSW and SLS and sessions to refresh and bolster their knowledge of activation procedures when responding to scenarios such as overturned vessels and persons in the water.

This afternoon’s sessions move on to large-scale search planning and procedures, including multi-asset and agency search and rescue.

Tomorrow, crews will board four rescue vessels from the Forster-Tuncurry, Crowdy Harrington, Camden Haven and Port Macquarie units, along with Rescue Water Craft and IRBs, to search north of the Camden Haven River for targets deployed early in the morning.

The lead vessel will be responsible for ensuring the search area is covered completely and all targets are retrieved.

The RWCs and IRBs will be tasked to search the shoreline north as far as Lake Cathie in case any of the targets have drifted inshore.

MRNSW hosts a series of regional SAREX each year as an integral part of our members’ professional training curriculum, building stronger cooperation and coordination between agencies to ensure rescue crews work can seamlessly together in emergencies.

The Mid North Coast units have thanked the North Haven Bowling Club and Haven Waters Motel for their support for the weekend’s training activities.
