  • Two new Regional Directors elected to MRNSW Board
  • November 23, 2013

Two new Regional Directors have been elected in this year’s Marine Rescue NSW Board elections.

Bernie Gabriel ESM was elected as Northern Rivers Regional Director, replacing Peter Campton ESM, who was elected in 2010.

Tony Long was elected unopposed as the Hunter-Central Coast Regional Director, replacing former director Peter Phillipson ESM, who resigned in June.

John Lynch was re-elected unopposed as Mid North Coast Regional Director. Jim Glissan also was returned unopposed as a General Director and was subsequently re-elected as Board Chair.

The Annual General Meeting was held at the MRNSW Headquarters at Cronulla today.

Mr Glissan congratulated the elected Directors and thanked both Mr Campton and Mr Phillipson for their contribution to the Board, the organisation and the volunteers.

A Life Member of MRNSW, Mr Gabriel is a member and former Unit Commander of Marine Rescue Point Danger, on the NSW-Queensland border.

His contribution to marine rescue stretches back to 1965, when he became a Foundation Member of Air Sea Rescue (ASR) Tweed Heads. His positions have included President and Vice President, Chief Training Officer, Chief of Operations, Chief Skipper and Volunteer Marine Rescue delegate for Queensland and NSW.

“I thoroughly enjoy the personal contact with Unit Commanders and members of all units, which I have had over a long period of time. I will apply myself to duties of Regional Director with the same dedication as I have with all the positions I have held in Marine Rescue,” he said.

Mr Long joined the then Royal Volunteer Coastal Patrol in 2008 and is a member of Marine Rescue Central Coast. A NSW Police Force Chief Inspector, he is currently working as Staff Officer to the Commander of the Special Services Group, which has responsibility for Marine Area Command and the Aviation Support Branch.

“As an operational member of MRNSW, coupled with an extensive policing background with the NSW Police Force, including emergency management and search and rescue, I believe I can make a positive contribution to the Board,” he said.

“Members of MRNSW hold a wealth of experience and knowledge and with proper consultation and involvement in the broader MRNSW initiatives, the future of MRNSW is a positive one. Team work is the essence to ensure this occurs.”
