Four sailors who this week sought shelter in Ulladulla Harbour from tumultuous sea and weather conditions have acknowledged the assistance of Marine Rescue units along the southern NSW coastline.

Skipper Trevor Chambers and crew members Phil Sandy, Mark Brennan and Graeme Potts entered the harbour at 4.15pm on Monday after battling severe ocean conditions caused by the powerful east coast low.

The four men had departed Melbourne two days earlier, intending to sail to Sydney and then Queensland on their 40 foot yacht.

Trevor said the passage through the Bass Straight had been favourable.

“We motored all the way through the Bass Straight easily. The bad weather hit much earlier than we expected, just after Gabo Island,” he said.

“I’ve seen all types of storms that come and go. This is the worst persistent weather I’ve seen in 40 years at sea.

“With a 2 metre keel we had to keep going until we reached a coastal port of suitable depth.

“We were happy with Marine Rescue all the way up the east coast. They have been very helpful. The radio operator at Ulladulla assisted our approach to Ulladulla Harbour.”

The crew primarily used the repeater Channel 81 as the yacht neared Ulladulla and employed the AIS tracking system.

Trevor purchased his yacht in 2011 from the US Virgin Islands in the Caribbean.

He and Phil, each with 40 years’ oceangoing experience, sailed for six months en route to Australia via the Panama Canal, experiencing a generally good voyage. Phil also is a veteran of the 1996 Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race.
