A man has been taken to Shoalhaven Hospital after escaping from a burning yacht on the New South Wales South Coast.

The Sydney man was the only person onboard when the boat caught alight on the Shoalhaven River.

He was picked up by a passing vessel before his yacht burnt to the waterline, east of the Nowra Bridge.

Marine Rescue's Illawarra regional controller Bruce Mitchell said fire crews had difficulty putting out the flames.
