  • First woman elected to Marine Rescue NSW Board
  • November 29, 2014

Patricia Fayers has become the first woman to be elected to the Marine Rescue NSW Board of Directors.

Mrs Fayers, a member and former Unit Commander of Marine Rescue Central Coast, has been elected as a General Director of the organisation, replacing retiring foundation Director Mike Stringer.

The results of the 2014 elections were announced at the MRNSW Annual General Meeting, held at the State Headquarters, at Cronulla, this morning.

Mr David White, a member and former Unit Commander of Marine Rescue Cottage Point, was elected as the General Sydney Regional Director, replacing Mr Bob Wilson.

Mr Howard Staples, from MR Batemans Bay, was re-elected as Monaro Regional Director and MrBill Carter, from MR Shoalhaven, was elected unopposed as Illawarra Regional Director, replacing retiring Director Mr Doug Musker. Mr Carter previously served on the Board from 2010 to 2012.

Mr James Glissan was elected as Chair of the Board for the fifth consecutive year.

Mid North Coast Regional Director and MR Forster-Tuncurry member, Mr John Lynch, MR Broken Bay member Michael Seale and MR Shoalhaven member Dr Peter Taylor were awarded Life Membership of Marine Rescue NSW at the meeting.

Mr Glissan congratulated the four Directors on their election and the three Life Members on the recognition of their sustained and valuable service to the organisation.

He thanked Mr Stringer, Mr Wilson and Mr Musker for their contribution to MRNSW and commitment to representing the interests of its volunteer members.

“A member of MR Middle Harbour and a former Chair of the Royal Volunteer Coastal Patrol, Mike Stringer was one of the advocates for MRNSW and instrumental in its establishment in 2009. He was appointed to the foundation Board and then elected as a General Director,” Mr Glissan said.

“I look forward to working with the new Board to guide the strategic direction of MRNSW and support our volunteers in their work to save lives on the water. Almost a quarter of the members of MRNSW are women so it is particularly pleasing to welcome our first elected female Director to the Board.”
