  • Fisherman found safe after boat hits reef
  • December 16, 2015

A 90-year-old fisherman whose 4.5m open runabout ran aground on Congo Reef, north of Bermagui, has been located safe on shore.

The man left Bermagui about 9.30am, headed for the Four Mile to go fishing.

At 3.20pm, Marine Rescue Bermagui was notified by the skipper of another vessel that a boat was aground on Congo Reef, about 36 Nautical Miles north of Bermagui, and its owner had been taken ashore at the Congo Beach camp ground.

The owner was contacted to confirm his location and inquire whether he required medical assistance.

Narooma 30, from the neighbouring Marine Rescue Narooma unit, was tasked to travel to Congo Reef to determine the runabout’s location and Batemans Bay Police were contacted to check on the welfare of the owner.

The crew of Narooma 30 confirmed the boat was high and dry on the reef, about 0.25 NM off shore, and that the owner was with the National Parks and Wildlife Service caretaker at the camp ground. Narooma Police later reported he had been reunited with his family.
