FOR the last 20 years, Ray Thorpe and Heather Stacey have been volunteering to keep people safe in Evans Head waters.

Both of them are still very active in the Marine Rescue Evans Head team and have enjoyed their experiences.

"I joined when I came to town," Mr Thorpe said.

"It's a good community thing to be involved in."

Ms Stacey said she had met a lot of friends in the community through her volunteer work.

"Back then it was the Evans Head Coast Guard and we were situated behind the RSL on the jetty, which is no longer there," she said.

"That was no good as you couldn't see the bar."

Both Mr Thorpe and Ms Stacey have seen a number of changes to the service including the building of the base at Razorback Lookout and, more recently, the new training room.

Mr Thorpe said a lot of his work involved rescues with yachts, flat batteries or where boats running out of fuel.
