Twelve people on board a charter fishing boat near Broughton Island at Port Stephens had an early end to an expected day out fishing when mechanical problems stopped the 10m vessel.

Tony O’Donnell, Deputy Unit Commander Marine Rescue Port Stephens said, “Our radio operators received a call for help from the vessel this morning and a volunteer crew set out at 9:30am to its position on the other side of Broughton Island. Fortunately the weather has been splendid today, with calm seas and low winds although there is a strong window warning for later on.”

The disabled vessel had set its anchor and was in no immediate danger.

It has now been taken under tow by rescue vessel Port Stephens 40 ‘Danial Thain’ and is returning to the safety of port.

Marine Rescue NSW reminds all boaters to know the radio details of their local Marine Rescue base so no delays are experienced in calling for help in any emergency and recommends including phone contacts in their mobile phones.
