  • Marine Rescue NSW welcomes approval for new Ulladulla base
  • May 06, 2014

Marine Rescue NSW has welcomed the green light for the rebuilding of its Ulladulla unit base, destroyed by fire on the October long weekend last year.

Commissioner Stacey Tannos said the news that the reconstruction on the same site had been approved would be a boon for the unit’s 101 volunteers.

“The loss of their base, which had only recently been upgraded, was a terrible blow for the members but they did not allow this to disrupt their services to the boating community, relocating first to their rescue vessel on the harbour and then to alternative premises,” he said.

“We now have Department of Lands’ approval to proceed to the construction of a new base on the existing site, which is licensed to the unit. The project cost will be covered by our insurance, which is provided through the State Government’s Treasury Managed Fund.”

Commissioner Tannos thanked Parliamentary Speaker and Member for South Coast Shelley Hancock for her assistance in securing the necessary Government approvals and Shoalhaven Mayor Joanna Gash and Council for their cooperation.

He also thanked the Ulladulla Game Fishing Club for allowing the unit to operate from its club room in the immediate aftermath of the fire, Coates Hire for providing two demountable buildings as a temporary base, Telstra and Super Cheap Auto for their assistance with equipment and the community for its ongoing support.

“Most of all, I thank our members for their resilience and ongoing commitment to serving their community, particularly local and visiting boaters,” he said.

MR Ulladulla Unit Commander Ken Lambert said tenders would soon be called for the construction of the new base.

“We are very keen to begin work as soon as possible. We would hope to have construction completed by the end of the year but this will depend on the successful tenderer’s availability, good weather and everything running according to plan,” he said.

“We cannot replace everything we lost in the fire but moving into a new operations base will be a tremendous boost for the members’ morale.

“As well as replacing our operations, storage and training facilities, the project will also incorporate an amenities room for local boaters and sailors to meet the Department’s desire to provide additional community facilities on site.”
