A cool change has finally brought relief to Sydney, with temperatures dropping 12 degrees in just half an hour.

The CBD hit a top of 38 degrees for the eighth time this summer, putting the city on track to break a 120-year-old record.

Temperatures had already reached 35 degrees in the city by 9:30am and over 36 degrees in Bankstown and Olympic Park.

The blustery southerly change arrived just before 5pm this afternoon, temperatures at the airport falling 10.5 degrees in 10 minutes, and seven degrees in 15 minutes in the city.
