  • NORAH HEAD LIGHTHOUSE TURNED OFF FOR REPAIR
  • May 23, 2013

Boaters are advised the Norah Head Lighthouse will be turned off today to allow investigations to continue into minor faults with the rotation mechanism.

A Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) spokesperson said the five tonne light lens rotates on a bath of mercury in a secured lantern room within the lighthouse.

“The light will be turned off and the lens will stop rotating while an expert carries out investigations,” the spokesperson said.

“A temporary light is expected to be installed on the balcony of the lighthouse tomorrow to replicate the flash characteristic and range of lighthouse light.

"The Australian Maritime Safety Authority Rescue Coordination Centre in Canberra will issue an Australian Coastal Warning alerting the marine industry and mariners up and down the coast.

‘This is one of two such lighthouses in Australia. RMS maintains and operates the Norah Head lighthouse light. The Norah Head Lighthouse Trust is responsible for maintaining the lighthouse building,” the spokesperson said.
