Marine Rescue experts have taken to the water off Bermagui on the NSW Far South Coast as part of a major capability exercise.

The Search and Rescue Exercise (SAREX) is designed to test agencies’ marine search and rescue practices and coordination.

65 Marine Rescue NSW volunteers from the Alpine Lakes, Batemans Bay, Bermagui, Eden, Merimbula, Narooma and Tuross units have been activated as part of a major joint-agency search and rescue scenario.

The event also involves personnel and rescue assets from AMSA, NSW Police Force Marine Area Command, Surf Life Saving NSW and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service.

MRNSW Deputy Commissioner Dean Storey said the exercise would ensure crews were rescue ready for the summer boating season.

“We are stepping up our presence on the water and marine radio,” he said.

“It is important for our personnel to train with our rescue colleagues in order to fine-tune our response and maximise the safety for our courageous volunteers.”

This morning, rescue vessels and Rescue Water Craft from five MRNSW units, along with a police launch from Eden, have moved into a defined search area off Bermagui.

Search and rescue exercises are staged each year as part of an ongoing professional training program to sharpen marine rescue search and rescue skills and strengthen cooperation with other agencies.
